Piano Concerto No.2 - I. Allegro | Dmitri Shostakovich |
Scheherazade | Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov |
A thrilling program awaits you to start the symphony year featuring one of the most beloved symphonies of all time!
Elizabeth Raum - 'Mirror Image'
One of Canada's most accessible living composers, Raum wrote this short piece as a celebration of the transition from youth to maturity. Originally written for dual youth orchestras, the piece is a study in contrasts.
Dmitri Shostakovich - Piano Concert No.2 (first movement)
The symphony welcomes concerto competition winner Luke Chen in the energetic and uncharacteristically happy piano concerto by the Soviet era composer Shostakovich. Written for and premiered by his 19-year old son, it is the perfect piece for an up-and-coming young pianist.
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade
One of the finest and most evocative symphonies of the 19th century, the lush orchestration is still studied by composers today. Taking as his inspiration the varied and magical tales of the 1001 Arabian Nights, Rimsky-Korsakov wove a colourful musical tapestry. The piece will feature PGSO Concertmaster Lydia Hug in perhaps the most famous orchestral violin solo in the repertoire.
A series of four short films will introduce each of the four movements. These are original films created by Ehsan Mohammadi of Two Rivers Gallery.
Scheherazade is sponsored by Gordon Plewes - Raymond James
